  Achieving Competency in English, is a new, uniquely realistic, user-friendly life skills text for adult students. Using real student stories, dilemmas and questions, Competency targets essential life skills and cultural competencies. An added benefit to these lessons is that they prepare students for CASAS competencies (correlations are included in the book).

CONTENTS IN BRIEF: There are ten chapters related to common courtesies and body language, meeting people and social discourse, dealing with emergencies, how to use community resources, how to get a job, money management, housing, health, nutrition, education and strategies for taking tests. 

Chapters contain reading passages, real-life situations for discussion, realia, writing components, visual literacy for reading graphs and maps, critical thinking practice, filling out forms, crossword puzzles to reinforce vocabulary, suggestions for outside study, helpful internet addresses, etc. The tone of the book is friendly and humorous, enhanced by copious, realistic illustrations and cartoons.
